Live rock can come in many forms and have varying levels of life. It provides surface area for nitrifying bacteria and works as a biological filter. Filter feeders, algae and various hitchhikers also contribute to the reef diversity.  Live rock also adds to the esthetics of the tank providing shelter and hiding places for various fish and invertebrates.  We recommend 1-1.5 pounds of rock per gallon.
