Hard corals are generally broken down into two categories: large polyp and small polyp. Both types of corals lay down calcium on a hard skeleton via the polyps. This means they require adequate levels of calcium to thrive. The small polyp stony (SPS) corals have small polyps on a calcareous skeleton and are usually either branching or plated.  They require strong lighting and strong flow.  These corals are fairly fragile and are easily propagated by breaking off pieces.  They also require excellent water conditions and water chemistry as well as plenty of room for growth.
