Hard corals are generally broken down into two
categories: large polyp and small polyp. Both types of corals lay down calcium on a hard skeleton via the polyps. This means
they require adequate levels of calcium to thrive. Large polyped corals
come in a variety of colors and shapes and are often easily recognized by their
"pillowy" look. They require low to moderate flow and moderate to high
lighting. These corals propagate by spawning or budding whereby the colony
separates into multiple corals or grows small offshoots that will separate from
the parent coral. Many of these corals have long sweeper tentacles which
can cause a damaging sting to nearby corals so you must give them plenty of room
in the aquarium.
