The use of UV sterilizers in aquariums has many benefits in that they destroy bacteria and pathogens that may be harmful tank inhabitants.  However, UV units are not 100% effective in eliminating bacteria and can't be relied on for a disease-free tank.  Be sure to choose a sterilizer that is properly rated for your size of tank.
